Spicy Yoghurt released a new brush pack for Affinity Designer! It contains all the tools to mimic the use of a pen for digital drawing. Even the little mistakes you make while drawing on paper are included.

Drawing with a real pen has its own charm. Lines are never perfectly straight and no two dots are the same, and that's exactly what makes a drawing look hand-made. In a vector program every line is clean and sharp, so a lot of that charm gets lost. These brushes bring that charm back to your digital drawings.

What to use these brushes for?

This pack is great for creating one-colored illustrations in Affinity Designer, but can also be used to spicy up your colored vector art like in this next example.

What's in the free brush pack?

The pen brush pack contains 29 high-definition brushes to make your illustrations come to life. Here's a quick overview of all the contents:

Some brushes draw a line with a rough, hand-drawn edge. Others repeat a small pattern along the stroke, like the crosses, waves and loops in the example. Combine a few and your illustration gets a real hand-drawn pen look.

How to install the brushes?

The download is a zip file with one .afbrushes file inside. Unzip it first, then add the brushes to Affinity Designer like this:

1. Open the Brushes panel (Window > General > Brushes).
2. Click the menu icon in the top right corner of the panel and choose Import Brushes.
3. Select the .afbrushes file and click Open.

The pen brushes now appear as a new category in the panel. Take the Pen Tool, pick a brush and start drawing!

Tips for drawing with the brushes

The brushes follow the shape of your line, so they also work on curves made with the Pen Tool. Want to try another brush? Select the line and click a different brush, no need to draw it again. The Stroke panel sets the width. And if you have a drawing tablet, use it. Your lines will look even more like real pen work.
